Music Marketing Research and Planning

While researching for our music marketing project we ran into few issues. The work was divided evenly between each of us and we all researched a case study for each of our companies. Research was concluded relatively quick and other than some slight disagreements of what should be included, everything was accomplished easily. Some questions arose such as "What is a marketing technique that is specific to our genre?", "What is the target audience for our genre?", and "What are specific creative marketing techniques that our case studies used?" We were able to answer all of these questions easily through discussion and research and found some interesting uses of marketing. One interesting marketing technique is how the band The Killers has created their own hot sauce brand in which they have named each sauce after a song or an album.

The song we decided to go with for our music video was "The Man" by The Killers. My first idea was to do a twist on gender norms and have the main character of the video be a woman. My goal was to make an empowering video, however after some discussion with my group mates, we came to the conclusion that it may be misconstrued to be her being empowered simply because of her choosing to be more masculine. After closer analyzing the song lyrics and getting the vibe of the song, we started brainstorming more ideas for our music video. Eventually we stumbled upon the idea of the main character being a king as many of the lyrics of the song have reference to royalty, such as the line "They kiss on the ring, I carry the crown". We built off this idea and decided to base our whole brand around a royal theme, ultimately naming our band M'Lady.

During our planning for how we would market our band, we went back over our research and noticed how all the of the bands that we studied have common marketing techniques. Each band had their own website, did interviews, and had numerous social medias such as YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter. After seeing this we created our own Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and website. While my group member, Isa, worked on creating the different social medias, Sabrina and I worked on developing different logos for the band. To go with the theme of the band mentioned above, we created two logos centered around a royal theme, one we placed as the profile pictures for our created social medias and the other we plan to place on a shirt that will be featured in our music video. Next we plan on story boarding our music video as we already have the basic concept down, that being that I will dress as a king and carry myself with an air of swagger throughout the video in an ironic manner. Throughout the video their will be different occurrences in which I will act as "The Man," such as helping someone cross the street and then bowing with my crown, or donating money to someone on the street.
